Discuss daily life and responsibility
Talk about work, study, worship, rest, household duties, visits, and time with both families. Clarify housing, relocation, employment after marriage, and possible changes when children arrive. The aim is not identical preferences, but enough detail to know whether both plans can fit respectfully.
Do not postpone material facts
Health, debt, continuing financial duties, a previous marriage, children, or a firm relocation plan can affect informed consent. Private details need not appear in a first message, but important facts should be discussed before either family builds a decision on an incomplete picture.
Observe the conversation itself
Notice whether the other person listens, can say “I do not know,” respects a different view, and remains consistent with different people. The way a misunderstanding is repaired is useful evidence, because marriage will require harder discussions than an introductory meeting.
End with a defined next step
Record what became clear and what still needs verification. Share relevant facts with a wali, family member, or trusted adviser, then agree to continue, verify a specific point, arrange a family conversation, or close the introduction respectfully.
Use a decision checklist
Before agreeing, review core values, housing and work plans, financial and family commitments, and the method for handling conflict. Identify questions that need evidence, decide who can help verify them, and set a reasonable decision date without pressure or indefinite waiting.
